A look back at the best in 2015

As midnight struck on Dec. 31, the new year was upon us. 2016 is a year to bring new memories, activities, and interests, but 2015 was an eventful year as well. During 2015 many new interesting and exciting things came out.

“Lean On” by Major Lazer, a group started by the artist Diplo, and featuring MØ, was released on Mar 3, 2015. The song was a party anthem during 2015. Also, during the summer, “Lean On” was in the top 10 for three weeks in a row and then moved to No. 1 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

A song that made everybody cry was Adele’s, “Hello”; “Hello” is the first release of music in four years for Adele. This song was listened to more around the world since Adele is from England, and was number one in the UK for three weeks straight.

Another major song of 2015 is Justin Bieber’s “Sorry”. “Sorry” had all people up on their feet dancing to the rhythm. One fan, Saria Nassar said, “I’ve been a fan since 2011. I love his work ever since he went from the bowl cut to the new hair stage.” Nassar is such a big Belieber that he has liked the artist for five years. “Sorry” was released and debuted at number two on the Billboard 100, only behind Adele’s “Hello”.

The movies last year have been very heartfelt, exciting and record breaking. “Furious 7” is the seventh installment of the Fast and Furious series, and came out on April 3. The film was action packed and sad at the same time and won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Movie. The film had a star studded cast including: Vin Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Kurt Russell, Ronda Rousey, and Paul Walker; as the film ended there was a tribute montage for Paul Walker, since the actor died in 2013 in a car accident.

“Mad Max : Fury Road” is a film set in a dystopian society and follows Max (Tom Hardy), as he leads a group of apocalyptic survivors away from their crazed warlords. This film was action packed and exciting. David Webster, freshman, said he liked the film “because it was very loud and it never stopped the action, it kept on going and going.” “Mad Max” received more nominations at the 2016 BAFTA awards than “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.

Probably the most anticipated movie of 2015 was “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. The latest installment of the Star Wars series took a different direction, as new characters were introduced. Also, the same characters from the last Star Wars in 2005 were casted, such as: Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill, who all previously starred in older Star Wars movies. The movie “had really good graphics and the storyline was amazing,” freshman Randy Wright said. Being action packed and thrilling viewers, it was loved so much that the film has grossed $1.78 billion globally since Dec. 18. The film has been out less than a month (date of fact was January 18) and is already the third grossing movie in history, only behind “Titanic” and “Avatar”. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will likely be the top grossing film of all time since it has been out a little more than a month.

There were many interesting and intriguing books published in 2015. First, there is “Go Set a Watchman” by Harper Lee. The novel is Lee’s first draft for “To Kill a Mockingbird” that never got published, not a sequel. The novel was written in 1957 while “To Kill a Mockingbird” was published in 1960. These are Harper Lee’s only published books. “Go Set a Watchman” has a similar setting and there are some of the same characters, but the actions of the characters and the way the plot is are totally different to “To Kill a Mockingbird”. “Go Set a Watchman” takes place twenty years in the future of “To Kill a Mockingbird”, in the 1950’s.

A book that was extremely suspenseful is “The Girl on the Train” by Paula Hawkins. It is a murder mystery novel, that is placed in 2013, in London, England, and follows the life of Rachel, the main character, and her bus trips, that turn into her life. The novel has done so well up to date that there will be a movie during fall of 2016.

Finally, “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr is set in World War II France. The book follows the life of a blind girl in Paris who lives with her dad, who works for a museum and has to take a valuable diamond named the Sea of Flames, from the museum and evacuate. The book won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, as well as the 2015 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction.

2015 was a year to remember, when many influential commodities were created. In 2015 records were shattered, dreams became realities, and new events came into hand. 2015 will always be remembered as an influential year to new inventions and ideas.
