Dear Abby, do you have any input on dating in high school?

It all depends on what kind of person you are and honestly, most of us have no clue. When you’re dating someone, you’re trying to figure out another person when you barely know yourself. It’s a risk and can cause a lot of stress; however, a relationship is something we all tend to want.

Some of us may want to date someone for the wrong reasons: revenge, attention, sex, etc. But for others, the idea of someone loving you and giving you affection is wonderful. Movies, TV shows, and books show us how great it can be. Although, a lot of time we mistake this make-believe for reality, and expect way too much from a relationship.

I’m not saying that dating is always bad. I’ve seen friends, strangers and even enemies become something great together. There is the possibility that a relationship can turn into something ugly, but even if it does, why should it matter that much? Everything is temporary, why not throw a little risk in your life?

Besides, the feeling that special someone can give you is something that no one else can. So if you’re lucky enough to have the opportunity to be with that person, of course you should take it.

If you do want to have a relationship, be sure that you’re not just dating to date. Be with the person who brings out the best in you, and try your best to remember you don’t need that significant other to fill the missing puzzle piece in your life. Be satisfied with the way you live your life before you involve yourself with someone else’s. If you can handle a relationship maturely, I don’t see why you shouldn’t give it a shot.
