Football Players Bleach their Hair for Rivalry Week

Which came first, the successful football team or the abundance of school spirit? As with all great questions, no one can be certain, but the football team experienced a bit of both during Rivalry Week, the week leading up to their game played against Thousand Oaks. Rivalry Week has been a tradition since 1971. This historic match is surrounded by numerous traditions, including the football team showing off their team pride by doing something outrageous with their hair. This year, the players decided to bleach their hair blond, stepping away from their usual tradition of mohawks.

“Other than the shock of waking up in the morning and realizing that you actually bleached your hair blonde, it’s worth it to show team unity and how pumped we are for this game,” said Kurtis Kuder, senior and varsity center.

Ninety percent of the team participated in this activity, according to Blake Vega, senior and varsity running back. He has no regrets about his participation in bleaching his hair. “It’s fine with me because we are a team,” Vega said. “I would do it for these guys and I know they would do it for me.”

The winner of this match historically receives a trophy that passes between Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks. “We are excited to go out and win the Conejo Valley Championship and get the trophy,” said Chris Sori, coach for varsity defensive line.
