Girls’ flag football touches down another season
The flag football team’s energy blows the stadium away. Win or lose, the players are always excited to step onto the field and give it their all. Even on the sidelines, teammates cheer each other on and bring their utmost enthusiasm to every game. The emotional and physical dynamic between all the girls is the reason why the team is as noteworthy as it is.
Since flag football was introduced last year, Kimiko Carmer, senior, has found a passion for being a part of something very unique on campus. Carmer has been a part of the varsity team for two years and is very grateful for the opportunities given to her. While Carmer did not have a specific person who inspired her to try out, the idea had always been in the back of her mind. “Before this program, I always believed there should be some sort of girls flag football team,” Carmer said.
Corner and running back Kate Johnson, junior, mentions that although it takes a committed person to balance a sport, she enjoys being a part of such a supportive team. Having such a welcoming circle of girls helps the hard days feel more enjoyable. “[Even though it is] a huge time commitment, it brings a super fun community of people,” Johnson said. Having had a position on the varsity team for two seasons, Johnson loves how it has positively affected her life. “It is so worth it in the end,” Johnson said.
Any sport brings challenges to the athletes, whether it be mentally or physically. Catherine Oliver, sophomore, touched on being mentally tough makes the difference between a good and bad game. “You have to be pretty mentally strong and be able to calm yourself especially if things aren’t working out for you,” Oliver said.
The experiences given to the team have pushed the players to work even harder to achieve their goals and to be able to reach them alongside one another. Being a sport dedicated to young women brings a sense of individuality with how the players can express themselves on the field. With it being the start of the season, the players are ready to show everyone what they are made of and what they are capable of doing. Over the past two seasons, the varsity team has grown closer as they learn about the techniques and develop their passion. “I [really] enjoy all of the new things and opportunities that come along with a new CIF sport,” Oliver said.
As the weeks continue, the team works harder each day to bring the power and fun to their 2024 season. Although each player has a different reason for joining the team, one universal feeling is the excitement towards playing alongside friends. Every single player is proud to be a part of the first flag football team at NPHS and they continue to make their school proud with their performances. “It’s important to not dwell on mistakes, but instead try to learn from them,” Carmer said.
