From the scariness that transcends to the typical jumpscare, “Us” is the unrivaled horror movie. Realisticity, no movie could have prepared me for the spellbinding adventure that a Jordan Peele film guides you through. After watching “Us”, I completely abandoned horror as a genre for over two years. I believed it was a disservice to expose myself to anything that could traumatize me the way “Us” did. The psychological torment that an evil doppelganger, who watches your every move, is more disturbing than any possessed doll or masked killer.
“Us,” written and directed by Peele, verifies his reputation for creating cinematic masterpieces with impactful social commentary. My view on the world has been forever altered due to the lasting impact “Us” has left on me. The main character, Adeline, is confronted by her childhood trauma while she has to face an evil set of doppelgangers, called the tethered. The tethered will not stop until they fulfill their mission, extermination of the person is identical to them. The idea that there is someone always out to get you, who knows you as well as you know yourself, is unnerving.
Unlike classic slasher movie characters, Adeline is responsible and quickly takes action, which makes her relatable to the average viewer. The traumatic events of Adeline’s past could have happened to anyone else.
The haunting soundtrack unnerves the viewer and creates suspense. The reason why the soundtrack was so discomforting was due to the juxtaposition between the angelic voices of the children’s choir and the whiny instrumentals. The soundtrack forces the audience to anxiously anticipate, desperate to see what happens next.
“Us” is spectacular, with each watch, more expertly placed details become evident. Peele’s attention to detail creates a remarkable and unique viewing experience no matter how many times you rewatch.
