Among the many spring sports beginning their preseason, one to keep an eye out for would be the girls’ lacrosse program. This year, the team is in division one and are hoping to bring home the title of CIF champions. In order to do that, they need to start off the season strong.
One player, Charli Huber, sophomore, gets back into that groove with ease, as she has been playing the sport for almost nine years. “I joined the high school’s team because I love the sport and grew up with it. I began playing lacrosse because my sister played and I wanted to follow in her footsteps,” Huber said.
To begin a successful season, the team has had to overcome the obstacle of windy weather. In order to stay united, they participate in lots of team bonding exercises. They do so by watching game films and going out to dinner together. “I also hangout with some of my teammates outside of season,” Huber said.
A third-year varsity player, Sadie Le, junior, finds that lacrosse provides an amazing environment for fostering a community. “A lot of us have known each other since middle school because of the recreational lacrosse league, so some of us already have a good bond,” Le said. “But in general we talk a lot during practice and we have team get-togethers every so often.”
One way the girls are able to come together and share their passion is through mixed practices, where JV and Varsity players can play against each other. “The newcomers can learn how to play and the veterans can get extra practice,” Le said. This season, Le hopes to step up as an upperclassman and provide the support that she gained as a younger player. “I want my teammates and myself to be able to count on me to make a defensive stop or clear the ball up the field. In general I just want to finish this season proud of how I played,” Le said.
Another athlete, Kaylee Meixner, sophomore, has been enjoying getting to bond with her team through their preseason practices. “We have been taking time to get to know our new coach and new players while also putting time into our skills and conditioning,” Meixner said.
With new leadership, the team hopes to reach new heights and achieve many wins this season. The coach is set to pair well with the strong team bond that exists between the players. “The team is like a family. We’re always there to lift each other up, whether it’s offering advice, cheering each other on during tough practices, or just being someone to talk to,” Meixner said.
The girls believe that with their dedication and talent in the running, they are shaping up to have a very strong season. They plan to dominate the field and prove their worth in the D1 realmand have fun. “I’m most looking forward to the games and getting to play with my teammates again,” Huber said.
