Labubus, matcha and Dubai chocolate create community

My room is a museum, littered with ancient items from the past and modern artifacts. In my closet sit my old Crocs and checkered Vans, and under my bed, my first-generation iPod is in a cracked pink case. But beyond this collection of mementos are physical reminders of the past.

I refuse to believe that I am the only person in the world who has adopted motifs from so many eras. The symbolism my old Squishmallows carry already rivals the nostalgia my Labubu will hold someday. Even if one does not collect physical fads, they’ve likely indulged in a trend in one way or another—whether it be a TikTok dance, internet slang or other forms of popular culture.

These shared moments are what bring people together. When someone recognizes the meme on your shirt or laughs at an inside joke from a viral TikTok sound, it creates an instant connection. Far from isolating us, phones and technology have become tools for forging new communities. Trends can spark conversations with strangers, give friends common ground and make an overwhelming digital world feel smaller and more welcoming.

Furthermore, online trends are portals to other cultures. A recipe video, a cool pair of bangles or a new musician can open the door to traditions and perspectives that might never be encountered otherwise. Even after the hype fades, I find myself genuinely liking the food, the fashion or the artist I discovered through a passing fad— my love of Dubai chocolate is proof.

It must be acknowledged that the cycle of trends also raises questions about excess waste and cost. Fast fashion and viral products can drain wallets and fill landfills. But thinking more carefully about what you buy, aiming to balance the joy of newness with a sense of responsibility, can alleviate this. Not every fad deserves to be followed, but some, especially harmless internet references or small physical fads, bring fun and connection.

While experiencing a shared sense of excitement and joy with millions of others through trends might seem either mindless or silly, I believe that allowing yourself to engage in popular culture connects you to others in a powerful way. Using humor and fashion as a gateway to community is an opportunity that deserves to be utilized by all–at least six or seven times.
