“I won’t settle for a guy with a fake job. They seem so desperate for lovin’, but, baby, I’m not.” These are lyrics from the song “Expectations” by Olivia Rodrigo. Rodrigo is known for releasing albums that turn her feelings into relatable music among a lot of teenagers. Unlike her other albums that capture the feelings of growing and experiencing heartbreak as a teenager, her newest release, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl so in Love,” brings on a new level of emotion. It challenges the stereotypes of love, and focuses on what adult heartbreak and emotional breakdown really feels like. What makes her new album stand out from other albums that were also released this summer is that Rodrigo is truthful when she sings about love and how it is not always going to end up being a happy love story. Through her music, she shows the excitement, fear and the insecurities that co-exist with love. Many fans find Rodrigo’s album relatable, as people experience different kinds of heartbreak throughout life.
“You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl so in Love” was released on June 12, 2026, and within the first week, her album was in the number one spot in five different countries. Since listening to Rodrigo’s album on repeat all summer, I can say that one of the best songs was “The Cure.” It is about the realization that another person’s love cannot fix your internal struggles or insecurities. This song almost brings me to the brink of tears with how emotionally compelling it is. “But my head is full of poison. And my heart is full of doubt. I got it. toxins in my bloodstream. You tried hard to suck ’em out” are such amazing lyrics, as it perfectly captures the feeling of dissatisfaction within your relationship. Rodrigo’s lead song, “Drop Dead” had a huge impact on music charts such as Billboard hot 100 and 200. “You’re looking like an angel on the walls of Versailles,” describes the feeling of having a brand new crush that puts you head over heels by comparing them to a piece of art. Contrary to other artists, Rodrigo’s songs do not tell me how I am supposed to feel about love and help me figure out my feelings and emotions.
Parallel to Rodrigo’s Album, Ariana Grande also wrote a new album this summer called “Petal.” Grande’s album is about breaking free from bad attachments, dealing with publicity and finding resilience within herself after heartbreak. Her album was released on July 31, 2026, and challenged Rodrigo on the Billboard Hot 200. Her album took up 12 total spaces on Billboard, her highest rating song being “Petal.” One of her songs, “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” is running for a Grammy and honestly, it deserves it. It is an amazing heartfelt song about having to deal with a relationship that exhausts you and dealing with overwhelming fame. “And I can see right through. Like shadows on the moon. And it’s all bad news,” is one of the best lyrics from the song. It is a very emotionally heartbreaking song, and really captures the relatable feeling of a tiring relationship. “I’ve been told I’ve healing properties. So, baby, can you promise me. That you’ll handle me properly?” Though both artists’ albums feature different perspectives on the changes through adulthood, they also express the different ideas that are brought to life through love.
