In a rare occurrence for Californians, tornadoes appeared in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Vernon last month. The tornadoes damaged eight buildings and shut down power lines briefly, though no injuries occurred. Small tornadoes are only moderately rare in California, and according to the Tornado Project, the last tornado to hit Ventura County was in 2010. According to the Weather Service’s Storm Predictions, California has a “marginal” risk of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, largely due to El Niño.
