Several of my middle school nights were spent lost in the sound of Midwest emo. I found comfort in its whiny vocals, confessional lyrics and gritty guitar backtracks. No band has captured that feeling like Modern Baseball.
On Oct. 23, the Philadelphia-based group released “The Perfect Cast LP”, a rerelease that revives the raw energy and lyrical honesty that made their 2014 sophomore record, “You’re Gonna Miss It All”, a cornerstone of the emo revival era. The new edition includes remastered tracks and live performances.
Though Modern Baseball has been on hiatus since 2017, their music still feels relevant and relatable. The first song on the album “The Waterboy Returns” fleshes out everything that made the band so charming in the first place. It sets the tone for the rest of “The Perfect Cast” and brings the emotional intimacy of their past work for both new and old fans.
The live and recorded versions of each song offer distinct perspectives on the lyrics. The recorded tracks feel refined, polished and upbeat, while the live performances carry a devastating quality produced by the acoustic guitar.
My personal favorite is “Revenge of the Nameless Ranger” because of its beautiful lyricism, commenting on the internal battle with mental health with lyrics such as “quarrels with myself are turning into feuds” and “I’m just not the same.”
This album connects to older and younger generations. Throughout “The Perfect Cast,” a feeling of nostalgia seeps into every note. Each song carries an ache for simpler, easier times. Listening to “The Perfect Cast” feels like revisiting a version of yourself you thought you’d outgrown, only to realize those feelings never really left. Whether you are looking to delve into a new genre or trying to understand your angsty kids, this “The Perfect Cast” is worth a listen.
