NPHS’ track and field athletes race against themselves

With the finish line in front and a personal record to beat, NPHS’ track and field runs toward their goals. Student athletes and coaches alike find themselves with their own unique set of challenges to overcome within this sport.

Jeanette Flores, track and field coach, uses her years of knowledge of various sports to her advantage when mentoring athletes. “Sports [have] always been a part of my life and I have helped many local athletes excel in their sport. The knowledge I gained to help these athletes become better versions of themselves is why I coach,” Flores said.

Through positive coaching, Flores hopes to aid students in thriving at their strengths. “[I motivate the team by] letting them know the potential they have and tapping into that potential,” Flores said. She appreciates coachable students that take her feedback and use it to constructively grow during their training.

Although Flores encounters obstacles from injuries that setback athletes’ progress, she uplifts them by reminding them of balance and a set routine. “My role is to support the athletes with the disciplines they are responsible for and ensure that they, too, support our vision for the track and field program,” Flores said.

Despite the individual aspect of track, Abigail Pace, senior, appreciates how it brings the team closer and fosters greater bonds. “Since it’s a very individual sport where you’re racing yourself, there’s not very much drama. A lot of people are really supportive of each other, and it’s just a really great environment,” Pace said.

Pace views hurdles as the most challenging event, because of its physical and mental intimidation. However, through improving her mindset and form, she is able to overcome the obstacle. “There’s a big mental block because there’s a physical barrier in your way, and so I’ve had to work to be able to attack the hurdles and get over them really fast,” Pace said.

Like many athletes, Gabriel Bernardino, junior, enjoys the track meets where he can showcase his accomplishments and progress he has made. “My favorite part about track is the races because it’s where you really show how hard you can push yourself and it’s where all the hard work pays off,” Bernardino said.

An encouraging environment to train and grow in is what keeps Bernardino driven throughout the season. “A lot of the motivation comes from my friends, that’s kind of like the whole thing that’s keeping us together and getting everybody to push themselves,” Bernardino said.

As a whole, the NPHS track and field team works to simultaneously create a cohesive and healthy atmosphere where there is room to learn from mistakes and develop into their best versions. “Many returning athletes take it upon themselves to help their fellow teammates, and collectively, they support each other during competition. It brings the team together,” Flores said.
