Palisades fire suspect faces for 45 years prison time

Nine months following the Palisades Fire, Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, a suspect in the arson of the Palisades fire in January of 2025, has been indicted by a federal grand jury and will face up to 45 years of jail time. Rinderknecht was previously arrested on grounds of arson, with the recent indictment adding charges of arson related to the Palisades Fire. The fire burned over 23,000 acres, killing 12 people and destroying over 6,800 structures, causing billions of dollars worth of damage, according to The Guardian.

Originally from Melbourne, Florida, Rinderknecht was working as an Uber driver the night before the first fire in the Palisades was reported. Geolocation from Rinderknecht’s iPhone displayed evidence that he was in a clearing 30 feet away from the start of the Lachman fire, the fire that ultimately led to the Palisades fire. According to the Central District of California, Rinderknecht had fled the scene of the Lachman Fire, passing firefighters as they drove to the Pacific Palisades. Footage of the fire was then found on Rinderknecht’s iPhone. Heavy winds on Jan. 7 caused the fire to spread above ground in what developed into the Palisades Fire. On Oct. 10, FBI discovered a ChatGPT search on Rinderknecht’s iPhone cornering the act of arson and other fire-related topics. These, along with interviews from Uber clients the night of the fire, were brought to the federal jury as evidence against Rinderknecht. According to ABC News 7, following the ignition of the Lachman Fire, Rinderknecht attempted to call 911 to report the fire but the call was never received.

According to the LA Times, Rinderknecht’s defense will continue to claim innocence, calling the case circumstantial. Rinderknecht remains in federal custody until his next court appearance, which will be an arraignment in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles in the coming weeks. If a plea is not reached in this coming court appearance it is possible a trial will follow.
