The Grinch steals Christmas and our hearts

As the holiday season is in full swing, new winter movies are coming to theaters. The Grinch was released as a film for the third time on Nov. 9, 2018. The new movie put the Dr. Seuss classic in a different light, with a slight spin on both the storyline and characters.

The new Grinch and old Grinch movies were both representations of the book, but no remake can top the original movie. The old Grinch movie portrayed the main character, the Grinch, as jealous and filled with envy, with his evil smile and green suit. However, the new Grinch was not as mean, and throughout the entire movie, had a lighter mood. The new Grinch had a higher voice than expected, which contrasted his villainous character.

The old Grinch movie made a lasting impact on all the children who’ve ever watched it. The song, “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch,” is recognizable both in and out of context. By listening to it, everyone who has seen the original Grinch, and most people who haven’t, can connect the song to its movie.

In the 2018 version of the Grinch, hip-hop/rap songs were played in the background, stripping the film of its recognizable audio. However, since it’s the 21st century, the film did a good job of incorporating current trends, such as listening to hip-hop music, to attract young audiences.

The new Grinch movie had very adorable characters and the animation as a whole was well put together. The movie gave an indepth look at each of the characters’ lives. For one, the audience was able to see the Grinch in his childhood and what caused him to be closed off and hateful towards society as an adult. The audience could also see Cindy Lou Who and her family’s experience with Christmas and encounters with the Grinch.

The original Grinch movie, which came out in 1966, grazed over the minor characters lives and focused mainly on the Grinch, while the new Grinch movie portrayed all characters as main characters, and provided an insight into each character’s life.

As children, a large population of the United States normally turns on their T.V. and watches movies like Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer, The Grinch, and more, during the holiday season. The Christmas classics are remembered as the children grow older, but the new Grinch movie does not seem like it would stay with children throughout the generations.

The storyline gave the limelight to multiple characters, instead of directly on the Grinch himself.

Both of the Grinch movies were “good” in their own ways; The original followed the exact plot of the book and the new movie took a modern day spin on the holiday classic. The new movie was definitely intended for young viewers of the 21st century, yet no remake can beat the original.
