Following a meeting with the heads of the largest Artificial Intelligence [AI] companies in the United States, Donald Trump signed an agreement to put controls on AI. On Tuesday, Sept. 29, during a technology summit held at the White House, Trump referred to the growing use and innovation of AI as an aid in “building America’s Golden Age.” CEOs and heads of companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia, SpaceX, Meta and Google were present at the meeting.

The agreement, called the “Joint Agreement on Frontier Responsibilities”, involves renaming AI to Super Intelligence. According to BBC News, this is a voluntary agreement that puts the companies in charge of managing the safety of their technology.

Trump expressed that he will set up a board that will oversee the development of the technology. According to NBC News, Trump believes that the benefits data centers bring to communities outweigh concerns.

According to a poll from AP News, a large majority of Americans, roughly 64%, believe that AI is developing too fast, with many of them expressing anxiety over issues like job security and environmental impacts. However, Trump has resisted slowing down AI development due to concern that the United States will lose its technological edge to other countries. This poll also showed that 67% of U.S. adults do not support the Trump administration’s approach to managing the growth of AI.

Moving forward, the administration’s AI policy will rely on voluntary commitments from companies such as OpenAI, SpaceX, Meta and Google.Trump’s newly established “Super Intelligence Force” will oversee America’s Artificial Intelligence.
