Whether you catch her behind the lens of a camera or on the other side, directing players on the field during a flag football game, Catherine Oliver, junior, is rarely at rest. Her days are packed to the brim with creativity and leadership, and her intense drive can be observed through a typical day in her life.
6:30 a.m.: Oliver wakes up for her first class of the day, choir. She enjoys singing with friends and going on the occasional field trip.
12:05 p.m.: After a busy morning, Oliver breaks for lunch. “Usually I hang out with my friends during lunch unless I’m busy doing other classwork,” Oliver said.
12:45 p.m.: On even days, Oliver heads to yearbook, where she is Managing Photography Chief. After doing yearbook in middle school, Oliver joined the Pawprint her freshman year and was able to work her way up to being a chief. “I find that those leadership roles help me because I’m able to better communicate with other leaders, as well as be able to direct people in ways that others might find difficult,” Oliver said. Photography has been in Oliver’s life for many years, and she finds a creative outlet in taking pictures. “Some of my favorite high school memories are getting to go to a bunch of different events for photography and just getting really cool photos,” Oliver said.
2:30 p.m.: Despite the typical school day being over, Oliver heads to her 7th period, theater tech, where she is a head of the sound department. “We’ve made so many fun memories, and we are always goofing off, but we still manage to get our work done. And so, we’ve made this little sound family,” Oliver said.
3:30 p.m.: In the fall, Oliver leads the varsity flag football team as a team captain. “I find being active really helps me creatively, because then I’m able to fully think through a lot of what I’m feeling at the time. I’m able to also express both emotions through art and athleticism, and it helps me a lot,” Oliver said. As a captain, Oliver is relied upon to bring energy to games and inspire her teammates, which is no challenge for a game she loves so much. “I’ve been doing it all three years of my high school career so far, and I really enjoy it because I’ve gotten to make a lot of new friends,” Oliver said.
Following her bustling days, Oliver heads home and prepares for another. With so many outlets, Oliver is able to express her creative and active side every day and thrives in her leadership positions. “I do find joy in being artistic and getting to express myself in different ways,” Oliver said. While she is hard to catch, a single conversation with Oliver will demonstrate her unwavering dedication to her crafts.
