Although the weather reports about the upcoming El Niño season is rather unreliable, your love for this playlist won’t be.
- “B*tch Better Have My Money” by Rihanna – Although Rihanna is already known to be a strong independent woman (who also has a killer sense of style), she brings the definition of badass to the next level with “B*tch Better Have My Money”. The song is already effortlessly catchy, but the addition of the music video similar to the raw style of Quentin Tarantino’s films makes it a perfect guilty pleasure song.
- “Upside Down” by Jack Johnson – “Upside Down” was made for the children’s film “Curious George” which might sound unappealing as the lyrics contain simplistic elements suitable for young ages. But, even to slightly older children, simplicity and the sweet reminiscent nature of childhood is sometimes appreciated. To top it off the lyrics don’t even have to do with monkeys (don’t get me wrong, I love Curious George), but rather has a universal theme applicable to anyone.
- “Glycerine” by Bush – The only way to describe “Glycerine” is an emotional rollercoaster. It starts off really soft and simple with a few guitar chords, but then, bam, the vocals jump in harmonizing with those same chords, and you just experience what only can be described perfectly by Tumblr as “the feels”. Bush has mastered the art of grunge and if you appreciate this song, check out the rest of the album, “Sixteen Stone”.
- “Trouble” by Cage the Elephant – “Trouble” is the debut song of Cage the Elephant’s new album that they are currently releasing. Although only three songs of the album are currently out, I already know it will be the cherry on top of the sundae of their previous three albums. Usually artists go downhill after the first album, but I feel like Cage the Elephant has only been getting stronger with their fresh outlook on the same musical style.
- “On My Way” by Billy Boy on Poison – This song brings concert ready beats to your ears without having to pay a million bucks. It contains all the best rock elements with its steady drum beat and rough guitar riffs that make you pumped for this holiday season.
- “Everlong” (acoustic) by the Foo Fighters – Contrasting with the original version, which is a hard rock anthem, “Everlong” really captures the lyrics in its stripped down version, making you appreciate the meaning of the song more. It’s perfect for winding down on a cold winter’s night, whether you listen to it by yourself or with loved ones.
- “America” by Simon and Garfunkel – Despite the lack of holiday music on this playlist, this song is perfect for the holidays. As the first song played in the popular movie, “Almost Famous,” it gives a nostalgic vibe for all of us who experienced the age of rock and roll, and those of us who wished they did. It also provides a welcoming feel, so you can settle down with your friends and family during the holidays with a song that feels like home.
- “Interstate Love Song” by Stone Temple Pilots – Here is a tribute to the Grammy award winning and Stone Temple Pilots’ lead singer Scott Weiland, who died recently at age 48. Though he isn’t here anymore, we can still enjoy the great music that Stone Temple Pilots has to offer us, including the emotional Interstate Love Song. Drive down the freeway in a red convertible with the top down to this one, and you’ll really feel free.
- “Twin Size Mattress” by The Front Bottoms – This sounds more like a New Year’s song, but with 2016 approaching fast, the need for emotional and heartfelt music is upon us. Twin Size Mattress really reminds everyone of what it’s like to be young and to be a teenager, as lost or crazy as life feels in that moment. Winter break will certainly be a time to crank up the volume while listening to this one.
- “Fake Plastic Trees” by Radiohead – To top off this December playlist, “Fake Plastic Trees” will have you admiring the real trees that surround you. With a surreal sound, Radiohead pulls of the soft edge of the song while really rocking it out with an emotional, electric guitar ending.
