On Tuesday, Oct. 6, the Newbury Park High School [NPHS] Alumni Foundation presented a check for girls’ flag football, funding a shed behind the football stadium.
Previously, girls’ flag football had no designated storage for equipment. Juliane Detweiler, NPHS alumni and president of the foundation, believes the new shed will positively impact girls’ flag football.
“It’s going to help them a lot because they can get a lot more efficient practice done if all the equipment is here,” Detweiler said.
With the help of the alumni and donations, the shed is next to the football stadium bleachers. The foundation also plans on adding a plaque to the finished shed, stating that it was donated by the alumni of NPHS. Detweiler says they plan to do this for future alumni tours to recognize what their money has gone towards.
“The class of ’96 is getting toured on Oct. 10, and when I give them a tour, I can show them the tangible things that their money has gone to that benefit students,” Detweiler said.
After the project’s approval from Stephen Lepire, principal, the foundation decided to start construction at the beginning of the school year, and it was completed before the first league game of the girls’ flag football season.
“We decided it would be a good opportunity to invest in girls’ flag football,” Detweiler said. “They had been Marmonte League champions and represented the school well.”
“I’m very thankful for the NPHS Alumni Foundation for putting this project together and all the fundraising that they did to give us a special place on campus here,” Wood said.
As the girls’ flag football season progresses, Detweiler believes that the shed will serve as an aid to their success.
“These girls are respectable, respectful, they hold themselves accountable, they work hard, and they’re dedicated,” Detweiler said. “They’re a good example of Newbury Park High School.”
