With over 2,000 students on campus, each with their own unique interests, passions and motivations, they all have something to offer within the NPHS community. Krish Devgania, senior, enters his fourth year enrolled at Newbury Park High School [NPHS]. Each year, Devgania has taken a course of Chinese taught by Jing Hu here at NPHS, inspired to try to learn a new language that was not offered in his middle school. “I really like Ms. Hu. Ms. Hu is a great teacher, and she will definitely help you through any challenges or difficulties within the class. She is very responsive and understanding,” Devgania said. Devgania has utilized the skills Hu has taught him in and outside of class, ordering Chinese food in San Francisco all by himself.
In his sophomore year, Devgania joined the Key Club, which is an extension of the Kiwanis global volunteering organization. His role in Key Club is to not only attend the weekly meetings, every Tuesday in room E-6, but also to dedicate time outside of school to community service. Devgania’s personal goal is to volunteer for at least 20 hours this year with the Key Club. On Sept. 27, Devgania participated in “Relay for Life” working at the Key Club’s game booth alongside his fellow members. “Relay for Life” is a charity walk fundraiser where all the proceeds raised at this event were donated to the American Cancer Society. With the funds raised, the American Cancer Society donates money for research to find a cure and resources for those affected by cancer. “I enjoy volunteering because it allows me to make a difference, to impact my community. Raising money for the American Cancer Society is important to me personally because of family members and close friends who have been affected by it,” Devgania said.
To follow in the footsteps of his older brother, Devgania aspires to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo [SLO]. Devgania wants to major in mechanical engineering, which is another reason why Cal Poly SLO stands out to him. “[I am passionate about] anything really mechanical,” Devgania said. For his future career, Devgania hopes to work for a defense company, like Raytheon or Boeing, to design weapons for the military.
From working out at the gym routinely to hand-assembling remote control cars, Devgania has a multitude of interests that extend beyond the walls of NPHS. He also enjoys spending time outside in nature by going on hikes. Devgania is an avid music listener, enjoying music from his artists: Deftones, Nine Inch Nails and Alice in Chains. He attributes his music taste to his father, who had played him these artists as he was growing up.
