Almost everyone knows what it’s like to bite into a spicy bit of food. You nibble a little bit of the food, think to yourself “this is okay, I can eat this”, feel your mouth start to burn, and then get lost in the trample towards the fridge for a glass of water.
As someone who really likes spicy food, I am always a little bit disappointed when something that is marketed as “spicy” is actually about as spicy as toothpaste.
For instance, cafeteria food: I always feel as though the salsa or hot sauce packets at cafeterias should be spicier than they are.
This problem, at least for me, is not a recent problem, but has been persisting for some time. The last time I had true salsa at a cafeteria was when I was in elementary school and they put out a bowl of salsa that you could ladle onto chips or something.
Ever since then, I have yet to find truly spicy food at a cafeteria. This is not just limited to school cafeterias either. Many places that are supposed to serve food with a kick forget the kick, and leave the food unseasoned and, while still good, sadly not spiced.
Whenever restaurants give an option for spicy food, I usually get one of the spicier options, but am usually convinced that I could have gotten an even spicier dish without having to resort to dousing my mouth with water.
Its also entirely possible that I had spicy food at one point that just completely obliterated my taste buds for spice, and that everything I have eaten that was supposed to be seasoned was actually hot, but I just wasn’t able to taste it.
The alternative is that places really need to boost their spiciness factor, especially for food that is supposed to have a kick to it.
