At the end of last year, Cabrillo Music Theatre had accrued a debt of $270,000. Over the following months, fundraising campaigns led to a massive recovery, much to the relief of performers and actors in the community.
“Cabrillo’s decline meant that, as an actor, there were less opportunities to perform,” said actress Rory Smith, freshman.
Though they are still striving to raise the remaining money, the theater recently met 84% ($211,259) of their goal of $250,000 and will be going ahead with the upcoming season. This will include the performances of the shows Memphis, Oklahoma, Mary Poppins, and Company.
Jenna Leaf, sophomore and choir member believes that if the theatre went out of business, “it would have affected the entire choir. It is the best place for concerts,” Also, Leaf voiced that people are extensively trying to help the theater with its troubles.
“I feel really good about the Theatre’s recovery,” said Leila Latham, freshman and drama student, a feeling voiced by other students as well. Leaf agreed with Latham, saying that she was excited to have the opportunity to perform in more concerts at the theater.
“Lots of people are passionate about theater,” Smith said. “It helps us become better performers. The shows turn out really well and are enjoyable.”
Despite the worrisome past few months, the theater’s fundraising has done its job. Cabrillo has at least one more season on the stage.
