When the school received unexpected funds, the track and football field were completely redone for the upcoming seasons. This was met with approval from some sports team members that are dependent on the facilities, which have not been repaired in a long time.
With many other improvements to make around the school, such as fixing the dead spots on the basketball court or getting new lockers, some students have questioned the importance of the new track.
“The lockers on the backs of the school buildings,” are where dancer Lark Detweiler freshman, speculates that she would have spent the money instead.
David Woolley, senior and returning cross country runner, agreed. He believes that the money would be better spent on new Physical Education equipment, textbooks, or lab equipment.
Cross country member Swathi Samuel, junior, sees things differently. “The track hasn’t been redone since it was built. This is the first time it was repaired. The basketball courts should be redone too, but everyone should get their turn,” Samuel said.
The track and field are used for sporting events, such as games and practice, as well as being used by the Physical Education classes. Maria Luciani, a sophomore on the cross country team, pointed out that the track and field are also used by the band, cheer, and dance team, in addition to the football and track teams.“(it is) really important,” Luciani said.
This recent change not only made the track safer for use by softening the landing during a run and decreasing the amount of stress on joints and bones, but also made members of the track and cross country teams excited to use their new facilities.
“It’s so much easier to run on, so there is less chance of an injury, which is really good,” said runner Caris Kozak, sophomore
The newly renovated track has satisfied athletes such as Kozak, who said that she is “glad the track is getting more money than usual. It’s often overlooked, so it’s nice that we get new equipment.”
