October has come and the weather has chilled. Leaves have begun their descent from the trees, and the scent of cinnamon is scattered in the air. Oh wait, none of this ever happens, we live in southern California.
Now, why is it that every year when “fall arrives” we continue to get excited over a season that is practically nonexistent in the area we live in? “Fall appreciation tweets” are all over my Twitter timeline and frankly, I’m confused.
Don’t get me wrong, I love fall just as much as any other common white girl out there. I’m just pointing out the fact that we’re getting excited over nothing. The only changes I’ve seen in Newbury Park are the changes to the Starbucks menu and the new pumpkin decorations at Trader Joe’s. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed those changes, but other than them, not much has changed.
Quite honestly, these past few weeks of October I’ve felt silly. When planning my outfit each night I would check the weather, desperate to see at least below eighty degree weather and break out my cute scarves and sweaters. In reality, why do I even own scarves and sweaters when there’s probably about half a week in December that I actually need them?
I guess I’m just a cold weather loving girl stuck in a southern Californian world. Part of me thinks we’re all just hoping if we wear clothes for cold weather it will suddenly get cold, but I’m starting to believe that’s not the best strategy.
I don’t know about anyone else but I’ve had a few days recently where I thought I was gonna pass out from the heat in my “fall clothes.” My potential heat stroke led me to a rude awakening that instead of looking forward to fall we should count our blessings and appreciate what we have as southern Californians.
People around the world are wishing for our dreamy California heat, and we really shouldn’t forget that. We’ve romanticized this image of cold weather in our heads when in reality we’re living the dream. There’s no raking leaves or shoveling snow out here in Newbury Park, only sunny skies and beautiful weather. Of course it’s unfortunate that we don’t get to wear our Ugg boots more often, but that’s the sacrifice we make to live in paradise.
